BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Evangel women's soccer team battled top seed Baker down the wire, but the Wildcats emerged from the fray with a 2-1 victory Saturday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament at Liston Stadium.
Abbey Schmidt stopped six of Baker's eight shots on goal, but Monique Diaz scored off a Mattie Chambers feed late in the opening half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, before Georgia Vernardakis added an unassisted goal in the 74th minute to double the home club's cushion.
Ashley Ard netted an unassisted goal six minutes later to pull EU to within one goal, but Vanessa Silva and the BU defense held their ground to close out the victory.
Baker outshot EU by a 15-11 margin, with Diaz and Anna Chieu registering a pair of shots on goal for the Wildcats.
Bianca Biffert paced EU's attack with five shots (two on goal).
Baker advances to the semifinal round of the Heart Tournament, where they will host Missouri Valley on Wednesday (April 7).
Evangel closes its 2020-21 season with its second-consecutive winning campaign, registering a 9-7 overall mark, including a 7-5 Heart Conference record.
