Evangel Volleyball Finishes Perfect Preseason Classic With Sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Evangel volleyball team continued its hot start to 2019 with a sweep over Oklahoma City, 3-2, and University of MObile, 3-0, to keep a perfect record after the first weekend of action.

 

Game 1: Evangel 3, Oklahoma City 2

Evangel and OCU battled back and forth as the Crusaders dominated the Stars hitting .371 in the first set. However, the Crusaders would cool off before finishing off OCU in a fifth and decisive set.

Bridget Petersen led the way with 18 kills and a .516 hitting percentage as the junior committed just two errors in the match. Daisy Eklund was close behind Petersen with 17 kills, while Regan Ansley added 11 kills for Evangel.

On the defensive side of the net, Petersen added nine blocks as Ansley tallied four blocks to help aid in the win. Eryn Russell finished with 26 digs, while Jorden Stacey paced the offense with 31 assists and McKenna Miller adding 24 assists.

 

Game 2: Evangel 3, University of Mobile (Ala.) 0

Evangel came blistering again, however, during game two it was an impressive defensive performance. The Crusaders held the Rams to just .028 hitting while finishing 16 total blocks. Petersen again added six blocks while Kristen Johnson chipped in with five blocks.

Daisy Eklund posted her first double-double with the Crusaders tallying 14 digs with 10 kills in the sweep over Mobile. Russell led Evangel with 15 digs, while Stacey also posted a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.

Petersen again led the Evangel offense with 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the win.

 

Up Next

Evangel heads to the MidAmerica Nazarene Classic next weekend, Aug. 23-24 where they will take on Doane and Fisk on Friday. The Crusaders will close tournament play Saturday in Olathe, Kansas against Trinity International.
