SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel volleyball team opened the annual Crusader Classic Friday splitting the first two games with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan, before falling, 3-1, to No. 21 Bellevue in the night cap.

The Crusaders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a tough 25-23, 25-19 win in the first two sets. The Eagles took the third set 25-13, capitalizing on nine Evangel errors, however, the Crusaders rallied to hold off Oklahoma Wesley 25-23 in the fourth set to claim the win.

Olivia Johnston led the way with 15 kills as Heather Gahm continued her high hitting percentage at a .391 mark with 12 kills.

Defensively, Hailey Noblitt paced Evangel with 15 digs as Johnston posted a double-double adding 14 digs as well.

The nightcap saw Evangel rally back to steal a set after Bellevue built a 2-0 lead with a 25-13, 25-23 win. The Crusaders took the third set 25-23, before falling 25-14 in the final set.

Evangel was unable to top the Bruins hitting just .078 as a team as Bellevue hit .212.

Gahm led Evangel with 13 kills as Johnston posted 11 kills in the loss.

Jorden Stacey earned a double-double with 15 assists and 18 digs on the defensive side of the net.

Evangel opens day two of tournament action against Tabor at 12 p.m. The Crusaders close out the tournament against John Brown at 4 p.m.
