COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Evangel volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday with a 3-0 sweep against Dillard (La.) before falling 3-0 to Missouri Baptist at the Columbia Classic.

The Crusaders easily took the first set 25-17 before a tough 28-26 second set. Evangel rallied to put away Dillard, 25-16 in the final set to clinch the win.

Heather Gahm led the way with 17 kills and a .344 hitting percentage for the Crusaders. Ayona Tharps continued her solid play during the tournament with 13 kills and a .345 hitting percentage.

Victoria Fishback added 43 assists in the win on the offensive side of the net.

The second set saw the Crusaders fall in four set to Missouri Baptist. It was the second loss during the tournament to a 20-win team falling Friday to host Columbia College.

Evangel struggled in the first two sets falling 25-19, 25-12 before taking the third set 25-18. However, the Spartans bounced back in a big way taking a 25-9 win to clinch the match.

Bridget Petersen led Evangel with 12 kills as Victoria Fishback added 25 assists to pace the offense.

Evangel returns to conference action Tuesday at Central Methodist. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
