SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Strong performances on the final day of the Saints Invitational helped the Evangel University volleyball team sweep Wayland Baptist, 3-0, and knock off Xavier (La.), 3-1, to close out tournament action Saturday.
The Crusaders wasted little time against Wayland Baptist with strong defensive performances from Brianna Justis and Allie Dunton-Moss. Justis posted a double-double with 20 digs and 17 assists, while Dunton-Moss added 23 digs. Evangel tallied 10 team blocks as well, holding WBU to a 0.58 team hitting percentage.
In the second match of the day, the Crusaders bounced back from a slow start after dropping the first set to beat Xavier, 3-1. Justis and Stacey Jorden posted double-doubles again in the same match for the second time with Justis adding 21 assists and 10 digs. Jorden tallied 22 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman Sandy Mohr paced Evangel offensively with 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage after Jorie Garrett led the way in game one with 14 kills.
THE LEADERS
Evangel: Brianna Justis posted a double-double in each match as Stacey Jorden joined her in the second match. The duo also recorded 20 plus assists in the final match. Freshman Sandy Mohr paced Evangel offensively with 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage after Jorie Garrett led the way in game one with 14 kills.
Wayland Baptist: Rossanna Ramos led Wayland Baptist with 26 digs and three assists.
Xavier: Juliana Tomasoni finished with 25 kills and a .389 hitting percentage and added 28 digs for a double-double.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (WBU)
- Evangel posted its first sweep of the season holding Wayland Baptist to a sub .100 hitting percentage.
- Jorie Garrett led Evangel in hitting with 14 kills and a .209 hitting percentage.
- Brianna Justis and Allie Dunton-Moss finished with 20-plus digs while Jackie Fugate added 10.
- Brianna Justis posted her second double-double of the season with 17 assists and 20 digs.
- Evangel recorded 10 or more blocks in every game this season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Xavier)
- Sandy Mohr led Evangel in hitting with 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage. She was the fourth different Crusader to lead EU in hitting in the season opening tournament.
- With Evangel's 20 blocks in game two, the Crusader have recorded 10 or more team blocks in every match this season.
- Defensively the Crusaders were solid with five different players recording 10 or more digs.
- Three Crusaders all finished with hitting percentage's over .300 as Heather Gahm and Morgan Kensinger joined Mohr on the stat sheet.
