Bellevue, Neb. - Evangel went 2-0 on day two of the Bellevue (Neb.) Tournament with a four set win against #12 Northwestern (Iowa) and a 3-0 victory over Mayville State (ND). The Crusaders extended their unbeaten streak to open the season 9-0.
Evangel downed Mayville State (N.D..) 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, and 25-13) in the first match of the day and followed that with a two hour, forty-five minute delay with the tournament schedule running behind to win 3-1 over #12 Northwestern (Iowa) (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, and 25-21).
Senior outside hitter Micah Guiot led the Crusaders with 11 kills in the first match against Mayville State. Junior right side Jorie Garrett added 9 kills and junior middle block Morgan Kensinger added 5 Blocks while senior Libero Morgan Smith added 17 digs in the win.
Morgan Kensinger led Evangel in their second match against Northwestern with 17 kills while Senior outside hitter Haley Watson added 11 kills. Junior Jackie Fugate recorded 5 blocks and Morgan Smith added 16 digs and senior setter Chloe Hadley added 44 assists in two matches for Evangel.
Evangel strikes 'Gold' with the win over a ranked opponent. Northwestern was ranked 12th nationally and Gold-N-Glaze donuts at 2933 E. Chestnut Expressway provides donuts for the players of each team that defeats a nationally ranked opponent this season.
The Crusaders improved to 9-0 on the season. Mayville State dropped to 2-5 and Northwestern fell to 7-2.
Evangel will be in action again Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they host College of the Ozarks at 7:00 pm at the Ashcroft Center for the Crusaders' home opener.
