Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel volleyball team won both matches on day two of their own tournament at The Courts in Springfield defeating both Tabor (Kan.) and John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday.
The two wins extends the Crusaders' winning streak to open the season to 14. The 14-0 start is the best start in program history. The previous mark was set in 2009 when the team opened 5-0.
The Crusaders won their first match against Tabor 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-10).
The first set loss is only the fifth set Evangel has lost all season.
Senior outside hitter Micah Guiot led the Crusaders with 16 kills. Junior middle block Jackie Fugate added seven blocks and senior libero Morgan Smith added 19 digs and two aces. Senior setter Chloe Hadley added 20 assists for the Crusaders in the win.
Evangel won against later in the day against John Brown (Ark.) in straight sets 25-11, 25-17, 25-17.
Seniors Haley Watson and Micah Guiot as well as junior Jackie Fugate each had six kills to lead Evangel. Fugate also tied with freshman Heather Gahm for a game-high seven blocks. Morgan Smith added 29 digs and two services aces and setter Chloe Hadley had 13 assists.
While Evangel went to 14-0, Tabor (Kan.) dropped to 5-4 and John Brown (Ark.) fell to 10-3.
The Crusaders will be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Baldwin City, Kansas to play conference foe Baker. The match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
