Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel volleyball team won both matches on the first day of their own tournament at the Courts in Springfield defeating both Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) and Cumberland (Tenn.) in straight sets.
The Crusaders won their first match against Lindenwood-Belleville 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15).
Senior outside hitter Haley Watson continued her hot streak with 15 kills for a second straight match. Junior middle block Jackie Fugate added four blocks and senior libero Morgan Smith added 11 digs. Senior setter Chloe Hadley had 17 assists for the Crusaders in the win.
Evangel won their second match against Cumberland (Tenn.) in straight sets 25-17, 25-13, 25-25. The Crusaders were led again by Watson, this time with 10 kills. Jackie Fugate added eight kills and junior middle block Morgan Kensinger had a game high nine blocks. Morgan Smith contributed 19 digs and senior setter Maddie Baumann had 15 assists.
The two wins push Evangel's record to 12-0 on the season. Lindenwood-Belleville dropped to 1-6 and Cumberland (Tenn.) fell to 5-4.
The Crusaders will be in action again on Saturday for the second day of the Evangel Classic. Evangel's first match is at 12:00pm against Tabor (Kan.) and game two is scheduled for 4:00pm against John Brown (Ark.).
