Box Score Olathe, Kansas – Evangel men's basketball team won a double overtime thriller 100-96 at MidAmerica Nazarene at the Bell Family Arena Thursday night.
The Crusaders, who trailed by as many as 12 with 8:17 left in the second half, tied the game with 4 seconds left on a Korry Tillery shot in the lane.
The Crusaders had a chance to win in the first overtime but a Dylan Bekemeier runner from five feet away in the lane fell short forcing a second overtime with the game tied 85-85.
No team had more than a three point lead in the second overtime until Korry Tillery hit two free throws with nine seconds remaining to put Evangel up by five. A three point shot by David Nelson cut the Crusaders lead to two with five second left, but two Nick Yocum free throws secured the win for Evangel.
The Crusaders were led by senior Korry Tillery with 30 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Freshman Dylan Bekemeier scored a career high 21 points and senior guard Brodie Wingert added 14 points.
The Pioneers were led by Nate Launius with a game high 32 points. Cale Brubaker and Gabriel Jordan added 18 points apiece for MidAmerica in the loss.
The Crusaders shot 43% from the field and 25% from three point land. MidAmerica shot 54% from the field and 44% from three. The Crusaders outrebounded the Pioneers 43-39 and won the turnover battle 18-9. The Crusaders shot 28 of 33 (85%) from the free throw line, while the Pioneers shot 17 for 24 (71%).
Evangel improved to 8-6 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. MidAmerica Nazarene dropped to 3-10 and 2-2 in the HAAC.
Evangel will see action again Saturday when they host Graceland University at the Ashcroft Center. Game time is 4:00pm.
