Box Score Shawnee, Okla. – The Evangel men's basketball team opened their 2014-15 campaign with a 91-79 loss to the NAIA I preseason #6 St. Gregory's University.
The #20 Crusaders were down 43-38 at the half with three starters on the bench with 2 fouls apiece. Seniors Korry Tillery and Brodie Wingert were given their second fouls within the first five minutes of the game and junior Josh Veurink received his second with twelve minutes to go. The Crusader bench had a five point lead with four minutes remaining in the half when St. Gregory's turned a five point deficit into a ten point lead. Evangel would cut it to five going into the locker room.
The Crusaders would struggle on defense coming out of the half and Cavaliers extended their lead to as much as twenty before the Crusaders chipped away at the lead cutting it to as little as eleven before St. Gregory's closed it out.
Sophomore Nick Yocum led Evangel with 18 points and Korry Tillery added 17 points and nine rebounds in the loss. The Cavaliers' Marty Wilkerson had a game high 34 points in the win for St. Gregory's.
Evangel will be in action on Saturday November 1st when they take on The University of Science and Arts Oklahoma at 3:00pm in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
