Evangel opened the Grand View University tournament with a split against NAIA top 25 teams on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Crusaders opened the tournament with a 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 14-25, 17-25) loss to #12 Missouri Baptist. Junior outside hitter Micah Guiot led Evangel with 11 kills and sophomore middle Morgan Kensinger added nine kills in the loss.
In the second match, Evangel defeated #25 Ashford (Iowa) 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 18-25, 25-16). Morgan Kensinger had 15 kills for the Crusaders and Junior libero Morgan Smith followed up her 27 digs effort in the first match to add 28 digs against Ashford along with three service aces. Sophomore middle Jackie Fugate had 9 blocks on the day to lead Evangel.
The Crusaders will be in action again Saturday when they take on #20 Jamestown (N.D.) in the NAIA volleyball Game of the Week at 10:00am and finish with #7 Viterbo (Wis.) at 2:00pm.
