He led the Evangel football team as the head coach from 2002 to 2009, where he was the second-winningest coach at that time, having won 44 games, reaching the postseason twice, including finishing as the 2005 Heart of America Conference Champions. Evangel advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2005 NAIA playoffs, going 9-3 and finished the season ranked #8 in the nation in the final NAIA poll.  Metcalf was named the Heart of America Conference Coach of the Year for this accomplishment.

Metcalf led several members of his football team to Kyrgyzstan in 2008 as part of a football camp and tournament mission trip. In addition to his mission work, he has conducted football camps and clinics in Barcelona, Spain, annually since 2018. He has also led teams in projects with Convoy of Hope, Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, Springfield Victory Mission, and international trips to Spain, Austria and Africa.

Prior to returning to Evangel in his current role, he served on the Leadership Team at James River Church in Ozark, Missouri as Director of the River Fitness Center.  Since 2021 he has also been an adjunct professor at Evangel.

In addition to his coaching tenure at Evangel, Metcalf spent time at Springfield area schools, Hillcrest and Glendale. He was also the tight-ends coach at Eastern Michigan University where the 1987 team he coached for won the Mid-American Conference Championship and was California Bowl Champions. He also served a stint as the offensive coordinator at Urbana University.

He is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and has been a member of the America Football Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.Â
