STERLING, Kan. – Evangel Football hit the road on Saturday (Sept. 5) night, taking on the Sterling College Warriors in a non-divisional KCAC matchup. Coming off a dominant win last Saturday, the Valor continued their strong play, taking a 42-13 road victory over the Warriors to move to 2-0 on the year.
Evangel scored on their opening drive, as Kyle Cummings recorded a seven yard rush on third down to give the Valor a 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Cummings scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 30 yards out to give the Valor a 14-0 lead at the 1:49 mark of the quarter.
Matt Allen tossed his first touchdown pass of the night in the second quarter, finding Brady Allen in the endzone to extend Evangel's lead to 21-0. Both teams would trade possessions late in the second quarter, but ultimately the Valor would hold the 21-point lead at the halftime break.
Evangel started slow in the third quarter, as Sterling would score a touchdown to draw within 14 points of the lead, 21-7. The Warriors threatened late in the third quarter, getting into the Evangel redzone, but Talon Stephens came away with an interception in the endzone to keep the Warriors from another score.
Matt Allen would find Gunner Ellison wide open to open the fourth quarter to extend Evangel's lead to 28-7 on a 44-yard bomb. Logan Putman would record the first interception of his career on a batted ball at the 11:50 mark in the fourth quarter and Allen would find Brady Allen once again, this time from 22-yards out, to score another TD, making it a 35-7 advantage.
Sterling would add one final score, but Grady Goss would block the PAT, making the Evangel lead 22 points, 35-13. On the final play of regulation for Evangel, Noah Bryant broke several tackles to score on the ground from 43 yards out, solidifying the 42-13 win for Evangel on the road over Sterling.
Stats are still being accumulated from Saturday night's contest and will be updated no later than tomorrow (Sept. 6) morning.
