LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Evangel Baseball concluded their series with Saint Mary on Saturday (Apr. 11) afternoon, looking to take a pair of wins over the Spires and earn the series win.
Evangel was victorious in game two of the series, 12-2, but was unable to take the series-clinching win, falling by a narrow 5-4 margin in the finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Evangel and Saint Mary both went scoreless in the first two innings of play on Saturday, before the Valor plated a pair in the top of the third. Nate Nunes hit a single and scored on a Quentin Edwards home run to left field, which broke the school record for home runs in a single season, giving EU a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Kannon Perry worked a walk and TJ Newman entered as a courtesy runner for the catcher. Newman scored on a Mason Reilly single, while a Nunes single scored Reilly, making it a 4-0 ballgame.

Justus Cherrico was hit by a pitch, scoring on a Reilly single, while Kannon Perry scored from third after Reilly was gunned down attempting to steal second base, 6-0.

Saint Mary scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, drawing within five runs of EU's lead, 6-1.

In the top of the eighth, Evan Jno-Baptiste doubled scoring on back-to-back singles from Nunes and Cade Beshore. Edwards ripped a single, followed by a K. Perry single to score both Nunes and Beshore. Reilly hit a sacrifice fly to score Edwards, giving EU a 10-1 lead.

Baptiste hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth while K. Perry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Nunes who was also hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Saint Mary added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the damage had been done, as EU took a 12-2 win in game two of the series.

The Spires took an early 2-0 advantage in the rubber match, scoring both in the first inning.

The Valor would respond with four runs in the top of the fourth to capture a 4-2 lead. Edwards, Heath Perry, and Peyton Gayer all worked walks with a Kai Strasser single scored both Edwards and Perry, while a Baptiste double scored Gayer and Strasser.

EU was unable to score any additional runs, as Saint Mary added a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 5-4 win over the Valor.

Evan Jno-Baptiste, Quentin Edwards, and Nate Nunes all went 3-5 from the plate in game two of the series.

Edwards' home run in the second inning of game two broke the Evangel single season home run record, his 15th this season. (Formerly held by Brandon Kelley, 1999).
