Evangel Softball Splits to Close Showtime Classic on Saturday

BRANSON, Mo. – Valor Softball concluded the Showtime Classic on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon in Branson, taking on NCAA D-III Greenville and (RV) Morningside.

The Valor could not generate enough offense against NCAA D-III Greenville in Saturday's first contest, falling 7-1. Evangel completely turned the tide in their second matchup of the day, run-ruling (RV) Morningside in a shutout performance, 8-0.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer earned the win against Morningside, striking out three batters and earning her seventh win of the season.

  • Five different Evangel athletes recorded RBIs on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Greenville scored a pair of early runs on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead over the Valor.

  • In the bottom of the second, Camryn Casey doubled and scored on a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Dill, drawing within a run of the lead, 2-1.

  • Greenville responded by scoring five consecutive unanswered runs, as EU ultimately fell to the Panthers, 7-1.

  • Evangel jumped on Morningside early, as Kenna Mayfield walked, stole second base, and scored on a Casey single.

  • In the top of the 3rd inning, Casey reached base on an error, while Karli Facklam walked, both scoring on a Audrey Carlton single to take a 3-0 lead.

  • The Valor added three more runs in the top of the fifth, as Carlton singled, Addison Whitmire walked, Danielle Cutbirth ripped a triple to right field, and Mayfield singled, making it a 6-0 ballgame.

  • Evangel solidified the game in the top of the sixth, as Natalie Morgan was hit by a pitch, Facklam doubled, and Dill hit a single, scoring Morgan and Facklam to take a 8-0 lead.

  • Meierer shut the Mustangs down, taking her seventh win of the year, as EU run-ruled Morningside, 8-0.

Evangel Softball competes in the Grand Slam Classic on Thursday and Friday (Mar. 5/6) afternoon, taking on Culver-Stockton, Stephens, Graceland, and Cottey in Branson.
