NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Evangel Women's Soccer returned to action on Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon, this time taking on the Bethel College Threshers on the road. Needing a win to keep pace in a tight battle for a conference tournament spot, Evangel earned three crucial points in a dominant 3-0 winning effort against Bethel.
On a McKenzie Calhoun cross at the 3:35 mark, one of the Threshers defenders misplayed a ball, scoring an own goal to give EU an early 1-0 lead. The Valor dominated offensive possession and shots in the first half, outshooting Bethel 8-2 in the period, but the Valor could not add any additional goals in the period, leading 1-0 at the halftime break.
The Valor broke through with their own score at the 67:36 mark of the second half, as Makayla Myers scored her team leading seventh goal of the season on a pass from Alexis Sudduth, giving EU a 2-0 lead. Evangel continued their offensive pressure on the Thresher backline and just 12 minutes later, Mattea Stockton added a goal on a pass from Calhoun to give the Valor a 3-0 lead. Bethel recorded a pair of shots on goal to close out the second half, but Paige Estes kept the Threshers off the scoreboard in the second half, earning a combined shutout with Samantha Shane in goal on Saturday.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"What a big win for us today. While we were leading at the half, we kept trying to force things centrally in the final third. We talked about how that was limiting our chances and began possession and moving so much more effectively in the second half," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "The two second half goals by Makayla Myers and Mattea Stockton were brilliant. Those points today were very important. I'm proud of the ladies for their adjustment in play in the second half and their effort to earn another win and a clean sheet!!"
