NORTH NEWTON, Kan. -- Evangel Men's Basketball hit the road to take on Bethel College on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon, looking to build off their win over Ottawa on Wednesday night. The Threshers would have a strong shooting night as Evangel struggled in the first half, falling to Bethel on the road, 90-68.
Bethel opened Saturday on a 9-0 run, as Evangel did not score for the first four and a half minutes, with Harrison Doennig breaking the cold drought, 9-3. Several three pointers from the Threshers allowed Bethel to lead 25-7 with 11:22 remaining in the first half of play. A Tommy Pinegar three pointer helped slow Bethel's run, but continued strong shooting from the home team allowed the Threshers to lead Evangel, 46-24, at the halftime break.
Jacob Lafferty helped keep Evangel in Saturday's game, scoring several baskets for EU, but the Threshers continued to match most of his points with scores of their own. After trailing by 20 points with 10 minutes left, the Valor used a 7-0 run to draw within 13 points with just nine minutes remaining. Bethel responded by hitting more three pointers and baskets in the paint, hurting Evangel's chances at the comeback and resulting in a tough 90-68 loss on Saturday.
QUOTABLEĀ
"Bethel played a lot tougher than us in the first half and it showed," head coach Bert Capel stated. "We played much better basketball in the second half, but couldn't get any closer than 13."
