The Basics

Score: Evangel 1, #3 John Brown 7 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (2-2-1), John Brown (3-1-1)

Location: Siloam Springs, Ark. (Alumni Field)

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Valor Women's Soccer traveled to Siloam Springs, Ark., on Wednesday (Sept. 10) evening, to take on the John Brown Golden Eagles. Knowing they would need to play a near perfect game against the third ranked team in the nation, the Valor would fight, but come up short in their matchup, 7-1.

The Golden Eagles scored a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead over EU early on Wednesday and Evangel would record their first shot on goal at the 24:57 mark, as McKenzie Calhoun put a nice attempt on goal. The Valor defense held the high powered JBU offense to just two goals for most of the first half, but JBU would score a pair of goal just prior to halftime, as EU trailed 4-0 at the break.

The Evangel defense only allowed eight shots in the second half and were able to put their own goal on the scoreboard, as Amaura Austell recorded her fourth goal of the season, making it a 5-1 game at the 57:22 mark. JBU added two additional goals before full time, as the Valor fell, 8-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amaura Austell recorded her fourth goal of the season and her fourth straight game with a score.

  • Rylee Clapp recorded five saves on Wednesday.

QUOTABLE

"While we play every match to compete and win, there are indeed moments when learning and growing becomes more of a focus. That was what we accomplished this evening. JBU was better than us in every facet of the game and is ranked 3rd for a reason, they are that good. While the scoreline was one-sided, we benefitted immensely from this match. Again, we conceded the same goal several times, so fixing that will be our focus over the next week," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We battled throughout the match and I am proud that we never let up. For that we will be better. We saw a level of play tonight that is definitely at the very top of what we will face in conference. Amaura Austell displayed some impressive attack this evening and netted her team leading fourth goal of the season. Mia Gonzales was called into action very early in the match and she made a difference. I am so proud of these ladies for how they play for and support one another and can say without hesitation that tonight's experience will pay off in a big way over the conference season that lies ahead!!"
