Record: Evangel (3-0-0), Waldorf (0-3-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Men's Soccer wrapped up their home stand on Saturday (Aug. 30) evening, playing host to the Warriors of Waldorf, searching for their third consecutive win of the season. Goals in both the first and second half made the difference on the scoreboard, as the Valor shutout the Warriors, taking a 2-0 win on Saturday.

The Valor offense kept the pressure on Waldorf early in the first half, as Evangel recorded four shots in the first 10 minutes of play. In the 28th minute, Vasco Goncalves crossed the ball across the pitch and found Juyong Kim who scored Evangel's first goal of the evening, pushing EU to a 1-0 lead. The Valor offense continued to register additional shots, as a header from Alim Bangura hit the left post and Caleb Kuchta had a one-on-one opportunity that the Warriors keeper saved, keeping the Valor lead just 1-0 at the halftime break.

In the 53rd minute, Joao Sa and Andrea Fincato put on a passing clinic, using several passes back and forth to get Fincato in position to score, extending Evangel's lead to 2-0. Although Evangel dominated time of possession in Saturday's contest, the Valor were unable to add any additional offense, but the Valor defense was able to hold Waldorf off the scoreboard, earning a 2-0 win in full time.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Andrea Fincato scored his second goal of the season while Juyong Kim scored his first in the 2-0 win.

  • Joao Sa and Vasco Goncalves recorded their first assists of the year in Saturday's win.

  • Davide Marzoli earned his third win of the season in goal, recording two saves and earning a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory.

QUOTABLE

"Waldorf was a tough team to compete against defensively, as they loaded the box consistently, forcing us to be patient offensively. I felt like we struggled in the first half and didn't play team football," Men's Soccer Head Coach Kyle Beard stated. "Coming out of halftime we got back to the basics and Andrea Fincato's goal was a key example of playing as a team, as Joao Sa and Andrea both expertly passed the ball through the defense and pushed out our lead to 2-0 to push the game out of reach."
