Valor Softball Falls in 10-Inning Battle to Two-Seeded St. Thomas

The Basics

Score: #3 Evangel 2, #2 St. Thomas 3 (10 inn.) | Box Score

Record: Evangel (40-11), St. Thomas (45-6)

Location: Lawrenceville, Ga. (Grizzly Athletic Complex)

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Valor Softball opened play in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Rounds on Monday (May 12) afternoon, taking on a tough two-seeded St. Thomas Bobcats squad in their first game of the tournament.

Despite Evangel trailing 2-1 early, the Valor battled and tied the game up in the fifth inning. Maddy Meierer and Anna Toon (STU pitcher) battled in the circle, as neither team gave up a run over the following four innings of play. After several opportunities came up short for Evangel runs, the Bobcats were able to come through in the bottom of the 10th, forcing the Valor to fall, 3-2, in extra innings.

NOTABLE

  • Karlie Romines went 2-4 from the plate, earning Evangel's lone RBI of the ballgame.

  • Maddy Meierer battled in the circle, throwing 9.1 innings, striking out four batters, and throwing 158 pitches.

  • Kenna Mayfield stole a pair of bases in the loss, moving her season total to 62.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Valor got on the board first against St. Thomas, using singles from Kenna Mayfield and Ellie Facklam and a walk from Karlie Romines to load the bases. An error allowed Mayfield to score, pushing the Valor ahead, 1-0.

  • St. Thomas scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 2-1 lead over Evangel.

  • Neither team scored over the following four innings of play, with Evangel tying the game up in the top of the fifth inning. Naomi Perkins singled and E. Facklam was hit by a pitch as a Romines single up the middle scored Perkins to tie the game up at 2-2.

  • In the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings of play, the Valor were able to get a runner in scoring position, but could not capitalize, leaving runners stranded to keep the game alive.

  • In the bottom of the tenth, the top of St. Thomas' lineup came to bat, as three consecutive hits from the Bobcats scored the game winning run, forcing EU to fall, 3-2.
