SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball opened a three game series with Southwestern on Friday (Apr. 11) afternoon, looking to bounce back with a win after dropping five straight contests.
The Valor offense was able to accumulate a big lead over Southwestern that the Moundbuilders threatened in the ninth, but came up short as EU took a 11-9 win in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Southwestern hit a solo home run to open Friday's game, taking a 1-0 lead.

Evangel quickly responded by tying the game up after Quentin Edwards doubled to score Shane Poe, who singled to get on base.

In the bottom of the fourth, Evangel opened the inning with a triple from Matthew Olson, followed by a sacrifice fly from Evan Baptiste to score Olson. A pair of errors by Southwestern allowed a pair of runners to get on, with a Clay Palen single scoring both Poe and Rhett Hayward in the inning. Heath Perry and Parker Ellifritz both singled to score Edwards, pushing the Valor lead to 5-1.

Southwestern added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, drawing within two runs of the Valor lead, 5-3.

Kannon Perry grounded into a fielder's choice and Hayward entered to run, scoring on a Shane Poe triple to give EU a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Edwards singled, followed by a Palen walk and an Ellifritz single to load the bases with two outs. Olson came up clutch with a triple to score all three runners, pushing EU ahead 9-3.

Evangel added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, as K. Perry singled and Hayward scored on a Poe double and a Palen sacrifice fly scored the runner. A wild pitch allowed Poe to score, giving EU a 11-3 lead.

Southwestern was able to score six runs in the ninth inning, drawing within two runs of the Valor, but TJ Newman was able to close the door, earning the save on Friday, 11-9.
