Valor Softball Splits Day One at Branson Bash

BRANSON, Mo. – Valor Softball opened the Branson Bash tournament on Friday (Feb. 7) afternoon, taking on Saint Mary of the Woods and Olivet Nazarene, looking to add to their season win total.

The Valor offense dominated behind Maddy Meierer once again in their matchup with Saint Mary of the Woods, taking an 8-0 win in five innings of play. In their second matchup with Olivet Nazarene, the Valor led until late when the Tigers evened the score, eventually taking a win from Evangel in a nine inning battle, 8-6.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer took the win in Evangel's first game, moving to 3-0 on the year.

  • Evangel recorded 23 total hits on Friday, but were outhit by Olivet Nazarene, 13-12.

  • Kenna Mayfield led Evangel's offensive charge, going 5-8 at the plate with five runs scored while Ellie Facklam led EU with three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A bunt single to open EU's matchup with SMW from Kenna Mayfield was followed by a single from Ellie Facklam, putting the Valor ahead 1-0. 

  • EU did not score again until the third inning when again Mayfield made things happen. Another bunt single was followed by a Naomi Perkins double and ground out from E. Facklam to score Mayfield. Karlie Romines singled to score Perkins and a Riley Johannes single scored Romines, making it a 4-0 EU lead.

  • Kenna Mayfield tripled in the fourth and scored on a Naomi Perkins double, putting EU ahead, 5-0.

  • EU took advantage of SMW errors, scoring a run in the top of the fifth while Danielle Cutbirth hit a triple to score a pair, putting the Valor ahead 8-0.

  • Maddy Meierer quickly closed the door on SMW, allowing just one hit and a walk and striking out seven batters to earn her third win of the season.

  • Evangel jumped out to a 3-1 lead early against Olivet Nazarene, using Mayfield's base running skills as the junior stole home to score, while E. Facklam, Romines, and Johannes all doubled to score a pair of runs.

  • ONU added a run in the top of the second but EU responded with a run of their own as Mayfield was scored on a Perkins single after hitting her second triple of the afternoon.

  • Leading 4-2, several walks and singles by ONU allowed a pair of runs to score, tying the game up at 4-4 in the fifth inning.

  • Neither team scored any additional runs before the end of the seventh, forcing extras on Friday.

  • Both teams scored their runners on second in the eighth inning, making it a 5-5 ballgame.

  • ONU was able to get their bats hot in the ninth inning, scoring their runner that opened the inning on second, as well as loading the bases and adding a pair of runs on top of the early score, taking a 8-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

  • Evangel was able to score their runner placed on second on a E. Facklam single, but were unable to create additional runs as they fell, 8-6, against Olivet Nazarene.

UP NEXT

Evangel will conclude the Branson Bash on Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon, taking on Judson and Calumet at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, respectively.
