HOW IT HAPPENED
-
After Maddy Meierer was able to work herself out of trouble in the first two innings of Friday's first game, the Valor offense put pressure on the OLLU defense. Karli Facklam worked a walk, followed by an error that allowed Danielle Cutbirth to get on base. A Kenna Mayfield single scored Facklam, while an error on the throw allowed Cutbirth to score. Ellie Facklam then singled to score Mayfield, putting Evangel ahead, 3-0.
-
The Valor defense held OLLU scoreless until the fifth inning, when a pair of Evangel miscues allowed the Saints to score their first run of the afternoon.
-
OLLU put pressure on Evangel in the final inning of game one, getting a pair of runners in scoring position with the go ahead run at bat. A groundout scored a run for the Saints and moved their runner to third, but a groundout to Ellie Facklam closed out the game for EU, a 3-2 victory over the top ranked team in the nation.
-
The Saints put up eight runs in the first three innings of play as the Valor offense struggled to get anything going. Danielle Cutbirth singled down the left field line for Evangel's only hit of the second game, as EU fell, 0-8.
QUOTABLEÂ
"I'm proud of the effort from our girls today. Maddy Meierer put forth a great game in the circle in the opener and gave us a big boost to help us take game one. OLLU was able to take advantage of our mistakes in game two and that's what championship teams do," head coach Jay Halbrook stated. "We're happy to come out with a split against the defending national champions. I'm excited for tomorrow as we'll look to bounce back and continue to give God the glory."
