GREAT BEND, Kan. – Valor Softball traveled to Great Bend, Kansas, to take part in the KCAC softball conference tournament, looking to open the postseason strong and attempt to take the conference tournament title.

The Valor took on the eighth seeded Tabor Bluejays in game one. Despite giving up a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, Maddy Meierer found her groove in the circle and the Valor offense used a strong fifth inning to rally, taking a 10-4 win in game one. In game two, the Valor took on a familiar foe, the #4 Saint Mary Spires, who Evangel had just matched up with last week to claim the regular season title. Both teams needed extra innings to decide a winner in their matchup, as a clutch ninth inning from the top of the Valor order proved to be the difference with Karlie Romines driving in the game winning run with the bases loaded, 4-3.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer took the win in game one, throwing a complete game, and moving to 15-1 this season in the circle as a freshman.

  • The big fifth inning in game one saw nearly every Valor athlete in the starting lineup recording a hit, as EU pushed across eight runs.

  • Madi Bentley earned the win in game two, moving to 3-3 this season, while Ashland Diggs had a strong no decision game from the circle.

  • Karlie Romines went 3-5 from the plate in game two, driving in the game winning run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tabor opened game one by getting a pair of runners on base and a blast to center field cleared the wall, giving the Bluejays an early 3-0 lead over the top-seeded Valor.

  • Evangel responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning as a Karlie Romines single scored Annslee Leevirphan, who had gotten on base on a single.

  • Neither team scored in the second, third, or fourth innings, but a huge fifth inning for the Valor proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

  • Evangel opened the fifth down to two outs, with Annslee Leeviraphan at first base. It appeared the Valor needed to wait until the sixth or seventh inning to mount their comeback, but the bats came alive. Ellie Facklam hit a triple to right field to score Leeviraphan, and Karlie Romines singled up the left field line to score Facklam to tie the game up at 3-3. Megan Stone singled and Lauren Dill singled to score Romines, giving EU a 4-3 lead. A Phoebe Gardner single that scored Stone was followed by a Danielle Cutbirth single that scored Dill, making it a 6-3 ballgame. Naomi Perkins singled to score Gardner and Kenna Mayfield capped off the inning with a triple to center field taking a 9-3 lead over Tabor.

  • The Valor tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth as Megan Stone reached on an error and came around to score on a pinch hit at-bat from Riley Johannes, taking a 10-3 lead.

  • Tabor plated a run in the top of the seventh but Maddy Meierer and the Valor defense held the Bluejays at bay, taking a 10-4 win in round one of the conference tournament.

  • Saint Mary opened game two by hitting an inside the park home run, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Valor.

  • The Valor did not respond until the fourth inning, but their response was a big one, as EU scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead over USM. Megan Stone reached base on a fielders choice and advanced to third on an error after Phoebe Gardner worked a walk. A Danielle Cutbirth single scored both Stone and Autumn Nold, who had come in to run for the designated player. Cutbirth came around to score on a Kenna Mayfield single to give the Valor their 3-1 lead.

  • In the top of the sixth, USM plated a pair of runs, tying the game up at 3-3.

  • Madi Bentley entered in relief as her and the Valor defense allowed just one hit through her strong 3.1 innings of relief.

  • In the bottom of the ninth, Kenna Mayfield hit a double to open the inning. Mayfield was able to advance to third on what should have been a sacrifice bunt for Annslee Leeviraphan, but Leeviraphan's speed forced an errant throw, as she was ruled safe at first. Ellie Facklam was intentionally walked, bringing up Evangel's best batter of the day (by batting average), in Karlie Romines, who smoked a ball to third base that scored Mayfield, walking off with a 4-3 win against the Spires.
