SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball returned home on Wednesday (Apr. 24) afternoon to host the Tabor Bluejays in their final home series of the season, as Evangel looked to clinch a spot in the conference tournament next week.

The Bluejays and their league leading offense exploded for 20 runs in game one, taking a 20-0 win, but the Valor bounced back in game two behind a strong outing from Colby Vavruska, who cooled off the Bluejays bats en route to a 3-0 shutout victory on senior day, clinching at least an eight seed finish in the conference standings.

NOTABLE

  • Colby Vavruska allowed just three hits in the win in game two.

  • Evangel moved their record back to .500 (23-23), looking to finish the regular season above the mark tomorrow afternoon at noon in the regular season finale.

  • Evangel clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the first time since the 2018 season.

  • Riley Mitchell broke the Evangel single season stolen base record in the 3-0 win in game two, currently sitting at 31 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel struggled in game one, generating just five hits while Tabor was able to plate 20 runs, as the Valor fell in game one, 20-0.

  • The Valor looked like a completely different team in game two, using sharp defense and clutch at-bats to push across some runs.

  • Riley Mitchell worked a walk to lead off game two and took his historic stolen base to get to second. Mitchell continued to flash his strength on the basepaths, advancing to third on a passed ball and ultimately scoring on a wild pitch to give the Valor a 1-0 lead.

  • Colby Vavruska made quick work on the Bluejays on offense, consistently working three up, three down innings to bring the Valor bats back up.

  • Evangel once again broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Levi Loughridge hit a one out double to right center field that clanked off the wall. Parker Ellifritz entered to run for the first baseman and an Isaac Miller single to the shortstop allowed Ellifritz to reach third. A passed ball moved Miller into scoring position and a clutch two out double from senior Carson Sturdefant scored Ellifritz and Miller to extend Evangel's lead, 3-0.

  • Vavruska and the Valor defense clamped down on the Bluejays, as Tabor was unable to generate any offense for a comeback, giving EU the 3-0 win and split with the Bluejays.
