Valor SB Shuts Out Bethel, Sweeps Doubleheader on Thursday

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Valor Softball hit the road to open a four game road stand on Thursday (Apr. 18) afternoon, taking on the Bethel Threshers, looking to remain atop the KCAC conference standings.

In game one, the Valor took advantage of Thresher errors, scoring six runs in a shutout win behind Maddy Meierer's strong pitching. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Valor scored nine runs over five innings, including a five run second inning, to run rule Bethel in game two, taking a 9-0 win and sweep of the Threshers to move their winning streak to double digits (11).

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer took the win in game one, throwing a complete game shutout, moving to 12-1 this season in the circle.

  • Ashland Diggs earned her eighth win of the season in game two, moving to 8-2 this year.

  • A 4-7 performance from the plate from Karlie Romines led the Valor bats, as Romines hit a perfect 3-3 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel scored a pair of runs to open game one on Thursday. Annslee Leeviraphan worked a walk and advanced to second on an error that allowed Ellie Facklam to get on base. Annslee Leeviraphan stole third base and both Leeviraphan and Facklam came around to score on another error to give EU a 2-0 lead.

  • The Valor scored a run in every inning after the third to take their 6-0 lead at the end of the game. In the fourth inning, Lauren Dill worked a walk and scored on a Riley Johannes double. In the fifth, Kenna Mayfield worked a walk, stole second, and scored on a Annslee Leeviraphan sacrifice bunt. In the sixth, Karlie Romines singled and scored on a Megan Stone double. The Valor plated their final run in the seventh inning, after Kenna Mayfield doubled and scored on a Ellie Facklam single to center field, making it a 6-0 ballgame.

  • Maddy Meierer allowed just three hits in game one, shutting out the Threshers to take the win in game one.

  • After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, Evangel plated five runs in the second. Karlie Romines opened the inning with a single and Megan Stone was hit by a pitch to get on base immediately after. An error allowed Lauren Dill to get on base and Romines to score, making it a 1-0 game. A Phoebe Gardner single scored Stone and advanced Dill to third, as Lauren came around to score on a Naomi Perkins single. A Kenna Mayfield fielders choice scored Gardner and an Annslee Leeviraphan double capped off the inning to score Mayfield, making it a 5-0 Evangel lead.

  • Annslee Leeviraphan came through once again in the fourth inning, scoring Naomi Perkins after Perkins worked a walk and stole second, on a single through the left side to make it 6-0.

  • The Valor pushed the game to a run rule in the top of the fifth inning. Karlie Romines opened the frame with a double and Megan Stone traded places with Romines, hitting a double to left field. Danielle Cutbirth entered the game to run for Stone and scored on a Phoebe Gardner single up the middle. Autumn Nold came in to run for Gardner and stole second, coming around to score on a Dakota Hale triple to right field, giving Evangel a 9-0 lead.

  • After Ashland Diggs shut the Bethel bats down in the first four inning, Madi Bentley struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to solidify the sweep for EU, 9-0, in game two.

UP NEXT

Evangel travels to Salina, Kan., on Friday (Apr. 19) afternoon to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m., in their road regular season finale.
