SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball returned to action on Friday (Feb. 9) afternoon, playing host to the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans in a single nine-inning match.

Evangel's offense continued their strong start to the season, scoring 13 runs and hitting .459 to propel themselves to victory in game one of a three game series, 13-12.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Taylor McLeod had a day at the plate, going 3-4 with 6 RBIs to lead the team to Friday's win.

  • Truett Gardner earned the win in Friday's game, with Levi Loughridge closing the door on Hannibal-LaGrange's comeback attempt, earning a save.

  • Evangel struck out just three times as a unit on Friday. The Evangel pitching staff struck out 14 Trojan batters en route to the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel was able to push out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Riley Mitchell was hit by pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mitchell advanced to third on an Eli Cook base hit fly ball that got caught in the wind and dropped in shallow left field. Taylor McLeod came up to bat to drive home both runners with a single to center field to put EU ahead, 2-0.

  • Evangel tacked on an additional two runs in the third inning. Eli Cook singled through the left side and scored on a Taylor McLeod double to left center field. McLeod came around to score after back-to-back singles from Brooks Espy and Carson Sturdefant, making it a 4-0 EU lead.

  • Both teams would not score a run in the fourth inning, but a pair of runs by Hannibal-LaGrange in the fifth as well as six runs, coming off of Evangel errors in the field, contributed to the Trojans new 8-4 lead over EU.

  • The Valor offense would immediately respond after giving up six runs, by scoring six runs of their own. Rhett Hayward singled up the middle to open the inning, followed by a pair of bunt singles from Jeremy Vickers and Isaac Miller. With the bases loaded, Riley Mitchell hit a hard ground ball to third base to score Hayward, re-loading the bases. Levi Loughridge hit a sacrifice fly to score Vickers and advance Miller to third. Mitchell stole second and Eli Cook worked a walk to load the bases once again for Evangel. Taylor McLeod hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller and with two outs, Brooks Espy cleared the bases with a triple to right center field. Carson Sturdefant responded with a single of his own to score Espy, putting Evangel back ahead, 10-6.

  • Hannibal-LaGrange would score two runs in the top of the seventh, making it a 10-10 game, but again the Valor would respond, this time with three runs of their own. Jeremy Vickers was hit by a pitch and both Isaac Miller and Riley Mitchell worked walks to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Vickers and advanced the other runners. Taylor McLeod once again came through in the clutch for the Valor, singling up the middle to score Miller and Mitchell, putting EU ahead, 13-10.

  • Evangel would not score for the remainder of the game as Hannibal-LaGrange would make the ninth inning interesting, scoring a pair of runs to make it just a 13-12 game, in favor of the Valor. With runners on first and second, Levi Loughridge forced a two out ground ball to third base, as Cole Leonhart threw to second to record the force out, solidifying Evangel's 13-12 victory over the Trojans.
