YORK, Neb. -- Evangel Women's Basketball hit the road on Saturday (Dec. 14) afternoon, taking on the York Panthers, in search of their third consecutive win. A strong first half was enough to power the Valor to a 83-79 victory on Saturday over the Panthers.
Evangel continued their streak of high scoring first quarters, putting up 26 against York in the first period. The Valor came out quickly, forcing several York turnovers to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute of play. A Carson Dillard jumper with 5:52 remaining in the quarter put Evangel ahead by 10, 19-9, before York ended the quarter on a run. A free throw from Resa Martin put Evangel ahead, 26-21, at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, York scored a three pointer to come within four points of the Valor lead, but a pair of Dillard three pointers and free throws from Martin helped EU re-extend their lead, 38-26, with 6:04 left in the half. The Valor held a double digit heading into the halftime break, 48-38.
Evangel and York battled in the third quarter, as the Panthers were able to draw within a point, 56-55, with 1:41 remaining in the quarter. Lexi Berry nailed a jumper and Kamie Jenkins scored a basket, making it a 60-55 game heading into the final quarter of play.
York was able to come roaring back in the final quarter, as Evangel grew cold from the floor. With 2:13 remaining, the Panthers scored a basket to draw within two points of Evangel, 72-70, before Kamie Jenkins responded with an and-one basket to retake a five point lead, 75-70. York scored baskets in response, but fouled on nearly every possession the rest of the way, and Evangel's strong free throw shooting helped guide the Valor to an 83-79 win on the road on Saturday.
