NIXA, Mo. – A touchdown from the McPherson Bulldogs ended the No. 16 Evangel football team's KCAC win streak in a 34-27 setback Saturday afternoon.
The Valor entered having won 18 consecutive KCAC football games and 19 consecutive regular season contests. However, Saturday's loss pushed the Evangel record to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference play, while McPherson improves to 8-1 and 3-0 in the KCAC.
Both teams ground attack found center stage Saturday. McPherson rushed for 154 yards while Evangel tallied 190 yards on the ground. Jalil Brown found the endzone twice including the game-winning score with 1:12 left in the game to give the Bulldogs the lead. Brown finished with 132 yards on 30 carries.
Evangel and McPherson matched scores nearly the entire game as a potential game-winning drive came up just short with an interception on fourth down.
Eric Williams continued to carry the lead offensively, finishing with 147 yards and 28 carries. However, Williams was unable to find the end zone as the lone rushing touchdown came from
Kenneth Spring from 12 yards out.
Reid Potts finished 12 of 25 for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
Broc Lyle's only catch on a 6-yard catch at the goal line, and
Brady Allen with the first touchdown in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs, Tristan Szabo threw for 269 yards on 21 of 32 and a pair of touchdown passes.
Defensively,
Bradley Myers led the way with 15 tackles while
Nate Swofford added 10 tackles.
Clayton Uber recorded the only turnover for the Valor with an interception in the second half.
Evangel finishes its home regular season schedule next Saturday against Southwestern for Senior Day. Kickoff from Eagle Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
