Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Valor Women's Basketball returned home on Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon to host the Ottawa Braves. After a strong win to open the new year on Wednesday, the Valor offense continued to roll, scoring 72 points and holding Ottawa to just six points in the fourth quarter, en route to the 72-56 victory.

Evangel raced out to an early lead, using baskets from four of their five starters to go on a 14-1 run. Ottawa, who is a strong three point shooting team, began to hit threes, scoring three in the quarter to stay within reach of the Valor lead. A Lydia Babirye basket ended scoring for Evangel in the quarter as they had a 21-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

Ottawa and Evangel completely flipped their play in the second quarter as the Braves scored 21 points in the quarter, hitting five threes to take a one-point lead at the halftime break. Micah Clayton scored four points in the quarter to lead Evangel, as EU trailed, 35-34, at halftime.

The duo of Micah Clayton and Kamie Jenkins dominated the third quarter for Evangel. Ottawa had no answer for Evangel's two bigs, as Clayton scored 11 and Jenkins added seven. A Jazzy Kirby three with 2:04 remaining in the quarter made it a 55-47 game, EU's largest lead of the quarter. Ottawa would score before the end of the quarter, making it a 57-50 ballgame, going into the final frame.

The Valor continued to dominate in the final quarter, similar to how they ended Wednesday's game. EU's defense slowed the Braves offense, allowing just six points in the fourth quarter, as Jenkins pulled down eight rebounds in the final quarter alone to record her fifth consecutive double-double of the season. A Jade Hinzman free throw capped off scoring for EU, as they took a 72-56 victory over Ottawa on Saturday.

QUOTABLE

"This one felt like a late season conference game where a lot was at stake. We started out well and then got complacent and allowed too many open threes in the second quarter. We obviously played smarter in the second half which frustrated Ottawa," stated Head Coach Jim Middleton. "Kamie Jenkins and Micah Clayton had wonderful games in the paint and our perimeter had much better shot selection in the second half with timely scoring. Good, tough victory today for the Lady Valor!."

NOTABLE

  • Micah Clayton led Evangel with 21 points in the win on Saturday, tying her career high.

  • Kamie Jenkins also recorded double digit scoring on Saturday, reaching 18 total points and pulling down 13 rebounds to claim her fifth consecutive double-double of the season.

  • Jazzy Kirby continued her strong season at point guard, recording eight assists in the win.

  • Evangel shot 39,4 percent from the floor in the win.

  • The Valor won the rebounding margin by 15 in the win on Saturday.
