WINFIELD, Kan. -- Valor Women's Basketball hit the road to take on the Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Saturday (Jan. 20) afternoon. After a slow start, Evangel's offense heated up the Stewart Field House propelling the Lady Valor to victory over Southwestern, 96-68, grabbing Evangel's 10th win overall.
Both offenses were clicking to open the first quarter, as Southwestern put forth one of their best quarters of the season. The Moundbuilders were able to take a lead over Evangel as Carson Dillard single handedly kept the Valor in the game, scoring 13 points in the quarter. Despite the strong performance, EU trailed Southwestern, 23-20, heading into the second quarter.
Evangel's defense shut down the Southwestern offense in the second quarter, allowing just 11 points to be scored in the frame. Dillard continued her hot start, getting up to 20 total points by the end of the quarter. A Micah Clayton basket gave EU the lead, 27-26, as the Valor would never trail after the score. A Kohnnar Patton three at the end of the quarter would give the Valor a 43-34 lead heading into halftime.
Kamie Jenkins and Micah Clayton would heat up in the final two quarters, helping to keep a double-digit lead over the Moundbuilders. EU was able to get up to 73 points by the end of the third quarter, their most points heading into the fourth quarter this season, as they led, 73-53.
Jenkins scored six points in the final quarter to help record another double-double this season, as EU's offense continued to stay hot, scoring 23 points, capped off by a Kate Denton three pointer to claim the win, 96-68, over the Moundbuilders of Southwestern.
QUOTABLEÂ
"We had a great balance of scoring inside and outside today. Our three point shooters were balanced and ready to go into shot mode versus the zone defense. I give credit to our passers who hit our shooters right on the numbers so they could let it fly. Carson Dillard got us started and many others followed her lead which was a good thing, as our defense was not its usual self at the beginning," stated Head Coach Jim Middleton. "But, in the second quarter, our defense came alive and helped us out. Another good road win today!"
