Valor WBB Opens 2024 with Conference Road Matchup at Sterling

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Women's Basketball travels to Sterling, Kan., on Wednesday (Jan. 3) evening, taking on the Sterling College Warriors for their first conference matchup since December 9th.

Tip-off for Wednesday's game is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Gleason Center with the Valor looking to earn their sixth win of the season and their fourth in conference play.

SERIES HISTORY

Evangel and Sterling will compete in their fifth matchup all-time, with the Valor leading, 3-1. Evangel's lone road game against Sterling resulted in their only loss in the series, 74-90, back in the 2021-22 season.

OPENING STORYLINES

  • Valor Women's Basketball returns to conference action, traveling to take on the Sterling College Warriors on Wednesday evening.

  • Wednesday's matchup is the KCAC's featured "Road to Hartman" doubleheader of the week, with ESPN Radio traveling to cover the road matchup.

  • The Valor took care of business in their previous countable game, defeating Williams Baptist, 75-52, on the road. 

  • Evangel ended 2023 with a record of 5-4, their first season above .500 at the end of December since the 2020-21 season.

  • Kamie Jenkins has been nearly unstoppable over the last three games for the Valor. Jenkins recorded back-to-back-to-back double-doubles in the win over Avila narrow loss to Bethany on the road, and win over Williams Baptist where she scored 13 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, the most in a single game since 2021 for EU.

  • Jazzy Kirby has distributed the ball well for Evangel, leading the team with 3.8 assist/gm.

  • The Valor are 11th in the nation in offensive rebounding, currently averaging 17.4 per game.

  • Evangel has struggled shooting so far this season from three, currently shooting 22.8 % 

  • Evangel nearly upset a pair of NCAA D-II schools last weekend in exhibition play, leading against 14th ranked UCM into the fourth quarter and forcing overtime against Lincoln University.

LOOKING AHEAD

Evangel Women's Basketball will return home to host the Ottawa Braves at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon in the Ashcroft Center.
