HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Evangel Valor football team held off the Tabor Bluejays, 14-7, Saturday night in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover game.
The Valor improve to 2-0 on the season as Tabor falls to 0-2 in the non-conference matchup.
Deadlocked at 7-7 at halftime, Evangel managed to take the opening kickoff of the second half and finish a 7-play 75-yard drive to break the tie.
RJ Wakley connected with
Dillon Hester from 28 yards out for the score as Wakley finished 19-of-36 for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Wakley's first touchdown came on the ground midway through the first quarter on an 8-yard keeper by the quarterback. He finished with 40 yards on the ground and 12 carries as well.
Sammy Robinson again carried the load rushing finished with 59 yards on 26 carries for Evangel. The Valor totaled 306 yards of total offense and recorded just one turnover; however, the lone turnover was costly.
Brandon King returned an interception for a touchdown just under nine minutes before half to tie the game at 7-7.
Again, the Evangel defense would stand tall. The Valor held Tabor to just 2 of 15 on third downs and 0 for 4 on fourth downs to help seal the victory.
Bradley Myers led Evangel with seven tackles, while
Andreas Moeller added six tackles and four tackles for a loss.
Brody Patterson added eight tackles and a key fumble recovery in the second half to stop a Tabor drive.
Holding the Bluejays to no offensive scores, the Valor defense limited Tabor to 80 yards in the air and 118 yards on the ground.
Evangel returns home to Eagles stadium Saturday, Sept. 9, to host Sterling College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
