Valor Women's Soccer Fights to Draw With York to Close Season

The Basics

Score: Evangel 1, York 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (5-9-4, 4-6-3), York (5-7-5, 4-4-5)

Location: York, Neb. (Cornerstone Complex)

YORK, Neb. – After falling on Wednesday night in the final minutes against Ottawa, Valor Women's Soccer traveled north to York, Nebraska, looking to take a win in their final game of the 2023 season against the York Panthers. Despite the cold weather and being down a goal in the first half, the Valor women fought hard and found an equalizing goal, ending their 2023 campaign with a 1-1 tie against the Panthers.

The first half was a battle between both teams as Evangel spent most of the period trying to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard. The Valor only mustered three chances in the half, although all three were nice opportunities that required saves by the Panthers goalkeeper. With less than five minutes in the period remaining, York scored to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Evangel again were limited in the second half on their shot attempts, only recording three, similar to the first half. McKenzie Calhoun's first shot of the half went high, but Calhoun would not be denied on her second attempt later in the half. At the 78:11 mark, Calhoun intercepted the ball and took it three quarters of the field, shooting past a defender and the keeper, hitting the top left corner of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. Evangel's Anna Krueger recorded a shot attempt that went wide of the goal, but this would be the Valor's lone attempt in the final 12 minutes of the game as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel was outshot, 21-6, in the 1-1 tie.

  • McKenzie Calhoun scored her sixth goal of the season and Evangel's 32nd of the year.

  • Chloe Hancock recorded 12 saves in goal.

  • With the tie, Evangel ends their season 5-9-4 overall.

QUOTABLE

"Going into the match today, we knew what we necessary and honestly talked a lot about just focusing on what we could control. While I realize we fell just short of the postseason, since we needed three points (a win), I will take a positive result, the draw, to close out a season that's been our best since COVID," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "I am blessed to have shared the field again today with an awesome group of seniors who have given a lot to this program over their years. This team has played very good soccer throughout the season and has overcome a few challenges along the way to do so and for that I am grateful and thankful to each of them!! Improvement this year in every single statistical category definitely adds to the excitement of what this program can look forward to and build upon!"
