LINDSBORG, Kan. – No. 15 Evangel dominated Bethany, 34-11, Saturday afternoon to open KCAC Divisional Play.
The Valor improve to 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in the KCAC. Bethany falls to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the Kessinger Division of the KCAC.
With high winds, Evangel took advantage of the second quarter to march down the field twice and take a 14-0 lead before Bethany kicked a 23-yard field goal. The Swedes scored their first points as time expired at the break.
The Valor held Bethany to just two first downs in the entire first half as they built a 14-3 lead. For the fourth time this season Evangel finished with more than 450 yards of total offense, while holding the Swedes under 250 total yards.
RJ Wakley finished with a career high 337 yards passing and three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. The senior finished 19 of 37 with no interceptions in the win.
Wakley's first score came with 7:19 left in the second quarter on a 3-yard run after back-to-back rushes pushed the Valor near the goal line. His scored followed an
Eric Williams touchdown run that was aided by a big 37-yard pass from Wakley to
Broc Lyle. Williams rushed for 37 yards on nine carries.
Eight different receivers caught passes in the win as
Dajuan Springer and Paul Summers each caught a touchdown pass.
Dillon Hester caught four passes for 74 yards as he ties the Evangel career reception record held by Brandon Schmidly (1994-97) with 148 career receptions. Hester passed his brother, Dallas, earlier in the game who ranked second with 146.
Bethany would finally punch in a score with 4:33 left in the third quarter to finish off a 15 play 67-yard drive to cut the Valor advantage to 28-11.
However, Evangel finished off an 8-play 62-yard drive at the 9:40 mark of the fourth quarter when
Sammy Robinson plunged into the end zone from 6-yards out.
Robinson carried seven times for 36 yards, while Wakley finished as the leading rusher with 9 carries for 40 yards.
Zach Myers led the Evangel defense with 12 total tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, and five tackles for a loss. Both sacks came in the second quarter helping give the Valor momentum as they built a 14-0 lead.
Brody Patterson recorded his team-best third interception of the season as Evangel scored 14 points off Bethany turnovers. As a team the Valor tallied 13 tackles for a loss.

Evangel returns home next Saturday for Homecoming as the Valor host Friends University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Eagle Stadium in Nixa, Missouri.
