STERLING, Kan. – The Valor WBB team competed in the Lonnie Kruse Warrior Classic on Friday afternoon and matched up against the Moundbuilders of Southwestern. The Valor would come out firing and never look back, taking a dominant 87-65 win from Southwestern.
In the first quarter, Evangel and Southwestern both took some time testing each other out. With 7:44 on the clock, EU would score the first bucket of the night, taking a 2-0 lead off of free throws from Zoey Mullings. Southwestern and EU would trade baskets until the Valor would go on a 7-2 run, capped off by a Bayley Harman three off the feed from Abby Wildermuth, to lead 17-12 at the end of the first. Alexis Cauthon and Harman would lead EU in scoring at the end of one with 4 points a piece.
In the second quarter, neither team could make a dent in the scoring margin. Every opportunity EU would have to extend their lead would be countered by a bucket by Southwestern. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, EU would still maintain their five point lead, 38-33. Lexi Berry would lead all scorers with 8 points at the half.
Evangel would come out hot in the third quarter, going on a 9-0 run, thanks to three free throws from Mullings, to push the score out to 47-33. Southwestern would not be stopped easily though, as they would go on a 14-4 run to trail by 4 with 1:20 remaining in the quarter. EU and SWC would trade baskets to end the half, and EU would lead by 6, 54-48.
The fourth was all Evangel. EU would go on a 14-1 run and never look back, thanks to an 61 percent shooting quarter where the Valor would score 33 points, their most in a quarter since November 26th, 2019 against Central Methodist. Sarah Lwambo would cap off the scoring for the Valor, making a buzzer beater layup to claim the EU victory, 87-65.
Five EU players finished in double figures, led by Harman's 16 points; Mullings added 12 points, while Cauthon chipped in 11 and Berry and Kohnnar Patton scored 10. EU also benefited from a bench that combined to score 37 points. The Valor defense forced 32 turnovers and recorded 14 steals, led by three steals apiece from Wildermuth, Harman and Patton. Makayla McVay led all rebounders with 6 boards. Berry recorded four assists to lead EU.
