Springfield, Mo. – Evangel rallied to tie third ranked Baker in the third quarter but the Wildcats retook the lead with a touchdown late in the same quarter and added a fourth quarter field goal to win 24-14 Saturday night at JFK Stadium.
The Crusaders trailed 14-3 in the first quarter before adding a second quarter field goal to trail 14-6 at the half. With 11:20 left in the third period, Evangel QB Brett Diers fired a 13 yard touchdown pass to Shawn Hebert and the Crusaders tied the game at 14 when they picked up a two-point conversion on a Diers pass to Otis Brown.
Baker took the lead back with 5:13 in the third quarter on a four yard scoring run by fullback Alex Stebbins. The Wildcats then put the game away on a 29 yard field goal by Logan Bretell putting Baker ahead 24-14.
Diers went 18 for 32 passing for Evangel with a touchdown and 183 yards while Brown caught 8 passes for 86 yards. Evangel out-gained Baker with 308 total yards to the Wildcats 298. But the Crusaders had three turnovers including a first quarter fumble that was returned 35 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats had no turnovers in the game and had 197 rushing yards in the game.
Baker improved to 3-0 and 1-0 in the Heart of America conference while the Crusaders dropped to 2-1 and 0-1 in the league.
The Crusaders are on the road next week with a 1 p.m. game at Peru State.
