Springfield, Mo. – Evangel opened at home with a 45-14 win verses Southwestern (Kan.) in front of 3, 078 at JFK Stadium.

The Crusaders came out on fire with two quick touchdown receptions by Michael Bowman from Brett Diers in the first quarter.  Evangel gave up a second quarter touchdown reception only to answer back with a 17 yard touchdown reception from Diers to Chase Nugent.  The Moundbuilders answered with a touchdown reception with 2:00 minutes remaining in the half making it 21-14.

That is all the scoring the Moundbuilders would get as the Crusaders defense would hold the rest of the night.  Evangel forced a three and out on the Moundbuilders first possession of the second half and then took the ball 81 yards on six plays capped off with Brock West 56 yard touchdown run.

Evangel forced a fumble on their own 25 yard line and then took the ball 75 yards on 5 plays with Michael Bowman catching his third touchdown of the night from Diers.

Southwestern fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Crusaders then scored three plays later on a Touchdown pass from Diers to Otis Brown to make it 42-14.

Evangel added a Cameron Mortazavi 38 yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 45-14 where the score would stand the remainder of the way.

Evangel amassed 487 yards of total offense with 274 on the ground to Southwesterns 258 yards of total offense and 99 on the ground.

Several Evangel players put up good nights with Quarterback Brett Diers going 19-26 for 215 yards with 5 touchdowns, tying an Evangel record held by Jake Anders.  Michael Bowman caught 5 balls for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Otis Brown caught 13 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.  The 13 receptions tied an Evangel record also held by Jason Meyers when he caught 13 passes against Baker University in 1988.   Brock West carried the ball 17 times for 148 yards and a touchdown.

Evangel improves to 2-0 on the season as they move forward to Heart of America Conference play next week when they host #5 Baker University at JFK Stadium. Southwestern drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
