Springfield, Mo. – Evangel started their conference season with a win defeating Avila 63-50 Thursday at the Ashcroft Center.
Korry Tillery led all scorers with 17 points and he added 8 rebounds. Josh Veurink also had 12 for Evangel.
The Crusaders led 28-17 at the half and went up by 16 in the second half before the Eagles cut the Evangel lead to six with 6:26 remaining. No Eagles player scored in double-figures.
Evangel shot just 35 percent from the field going 16 for 46 and survived committing 26 turnovers. The Crusaders made 29 of 42 free throw attempts. Avila shot 25 percent going 16 for 65 and turned the ball over 22 times. The Eagles were 17 for 27 from the foul line.
Evangel improved to 3-3 and 1-0 in the conference while Avila dropped to 4-5 and 0-1 in the conference.
The Crusaders play again Saturday in a conference game at Peru State at 4 p.m.
