Box Score Springfield, Mo. – Evangel pulled away from Central Methodist in the second half for a 34-10 win Saturday at JFK Stadium.
The Crusaders trailed 10-7 late in the second quarter but took the lead with 1:05 left in the half on a 31 yard touchdown pass from Brett Diers to Otis Brown.
Evangel's defense took over in the second half and posted a score early in the third quarter when Cody Christner and Zach Jones put a hit on Eagles quarterback Nic Stephens that forced a fumble that was returned 46 yards for a touchdown by Chandler Eden. That play gave Evangel a 21-10 lead and the Crusaders then added a 29 yard field goal by Cameron Mortazavi four minutes later.
Early in the fourth quarter, Evangel added another touchdown as Brown scored on a 78 yard reverse. Mortazavi added a 31 yard field goal later in the fourth giving the Crusaders a 34-10 lead.
Evangel set or tied a couple of single season records in Saturday's game. WR Otis Brown had five receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns in the game. The five catches gave him EU's single season receptions record with his 67th catch of the year and broke a 36 year old record held by Jon Ferguson in 1978. DE Ell C. Teycer set a single season record in tackles for loss as he picked up 3.5 in the game giving him 17 on the season. He breaks a record held by Michael Odom in 1994 with 16.
Brock West finished the game with 143 yards of rushing on 25 carries. Devon Overall led the defense with eight tackles.
The Crusaders improved to 5-4 and 3-4 in the Heart of America conference while Central Methodist dropped to 4-5 and 3-4 in the league.
Evangel is home again next Saturday hosting #10 Missouri Valley at 1:30 p.m. in JFK Stadium. Next week is Senior Day in Evangel's last home game of 2014.
