OLATHE, Kan. — The Evangel softball team battled to the final out just missing a sweep at MidAmerica Nazarene Tuesday evening after a 3-0 win in game one, the Crusaders fell 5-4 in game two.
Evangel jumped on the Pioneers early with a run in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout from AJ Carpenter. Michelle Sheppard scored the first run after leading off with a single and then stealing second.
Sheppard finished 2 for 4 as Kami Holt and Ashlie Marshall also added a pair of hits. Both played a part in the third inning when Evangel added a pair of what proved to be insurance runs to take a 3-0 lead.
In the circle, Bridget Rippe and her defense held MNU to just three hits as she walked just two and struck out two. Rippe earned her eighth win of the season and her second shutout in the complete game win.
The second game saw a couple of timely hits in the fifth inning help the Pioneers to a 5-1 lead.
However, Evangel continued to battle back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. In fact, the Crusaders had the tying run on the second base and the winning run on first when the final out was recorded.
Abby Emmitt was solid through 4.1 innings allowing just three hits, however, all five runs were earned as she also walked five. Emma Hill pitched the final 1.2 innings adding two strikeouts in relief.
Evangel returns to action Friday with a road trip to South Division rival, Central Methodist. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
