SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel men's basketball team never trailed Wednesday night jumping into the win column with an 89-82 non-conference victory over Baptist Bible College.
"I have to first congratulate Coach Meidners because their kids play hard," said head coach Steve Jenkins. "They hit shots and pressured us. Down the stretch, they cut our lead to single digits in the last minutes and our guys buckled down."
Evangel led by as many as 22 at the 16-minute mark in the second half and hovered around 15 points most of the game.
The lead was built early by Clark Brewington who knocked down eight three-pointers to finish with 28 points. Brewington finished two shy of the school record held by Jackson Capel against Graceland on Jan. 31, 2009.
"I saw some similarities tonight from Jackson's record night," Jenkins added. "Clark played really well, and our guys fed off his hot start."
Baptist Bible did manage to rally back late in the second half but the Crusader's physicality took over. Evangel outrebounded the Patriots, 49-35.
The Crusaders saw three other players join Brewington in double figures with Cade Coffman adding 12 points, and Edriel Martinborough and Chris Stocks finishing with 10 each. Martinborough earned a double-double pulling down 10 boards in the win.
Evangel managed to share the ball well finishing with 23 assists. Martinborough tallied six assists and Nate Davis finished with four.
BBC was led by Hunter Baker who finished with 19 points on 5 of 5 from behind the three-point line.
"We're getting better but we are also still finding which lineups work best together during the course of a game," said Jenkins. "We're not there yet but I really like this team. It doesn't get easier playing four times in seven days. So we need to continue building on what we've started."
Evangel heads to Williams Baptist on Saturday to continue non-conference action. Tipoff from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas is set for 3 p.m.
