SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A flurry of goals helped the Evangel women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Lyon College Wednesday evening in the season opener for both teams.
The win gives the Crusaders its first win over the Scots after a 9-1 loss during Evangel's inaugural season in 2015. However, Wednesday five different Crusaders found the back of the net including a pair of goals from Alyson Reinold.
Payton Trepagnier put Evangel on the board in the 33rd minute after Maya Davidson and Amber Ellis played a ball up the sideline. Trepagnier found the net for her first collegiate goal and the first goal of the season for Evangel.
Reinold scored the first of two goals near the end of the first half to push the Crusaders lead to 3-0 over Lyon. Her first goal came off a corner kick bending just past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net. Just minutes later, Reinold would score her second goal of the game off a pass from Ellis who also notched her second assist.
Evangel would build its lead to 5-0 in the first 15 minutes of the second half after Brooke Todd scored her first goal of the season followed one minute later by a goal from Ashley Ard. Ard knocked her goal in off the rebound in the 58th minute.
Lyon scored its lone goal in the 61st minute before Lily Axtell scored the sixth goal of the day for Evangel. Axtell also pushed her first collegiate goal in the net on the second assist of the game by Reinold.
Josie Gregory helped solidify a strong Crusader defensive effort with three saves in the win.
Evangel returns to action Friday against LSU-Alexandria in a men's and women's doubleheader. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
