BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Evangel softball team split its first Heart of America road games of the season Friday, falling 7-3 in game one before shutting out Baker University, 7-0 in game two.
Back and forth in game one, the Crusaders and Wildcats entered the sixth inning tied 3-3. Evangel scored two runs in the top of the third inning on a single to center by Kiara Carrier. Carrier finished 2-for-4 as she scored the first run for the Crusaders in the top of the second.
However, Evangel would go in order in the top half of the sixth, while the Wildcats scored four runs on five hits and two errors to break the game open. Evangel would threaten in the top half of the seventh, but leave the bases loaded without scoring a run.
Michaela Tolliver allowed 11 hits and was charged with six of the seven Baker runs.
Oliva Brees earned the win for Baker as she allowed nine hits, but walked none and struck out 11 Crusaders.
In the second game, Evangel was able to ride the arm of Kyra Parker who pitched her fourth consecutive shutout in a 7-0 victory. Parker ran her streak of no earned runs to 27 straight while holding the Wildcats to just four hits.
The senior pitcher walked none and struck out four to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Offensively, the Crusaders scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead. Evangel added its seventh run of the game in the top of the fifth with two outs as Cassidy Gillihan singled home Jackie Hoffmeier who reached on a walk.
Evangel continues action away from Springfield as they head to Benedictine Saturday. The Crusaders and Ravens will play a double-header starting at noon.
