SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel University football team has added a Top 25 marquee matchup to its 2018 schedule. The Crusaders and Southwestern Assemblies of God University have agreed to play at Tiger Stadium in Ozark.
The game will feature two top 25 teams as the Crusaders finished the season ranked No. 25 and SAGU ended the season ranked No. 19. Both schools are two of the three Assemblies of God football-playing schools in the NAIA and will meet Thursday, Aug. 23, in Ozark, Mo., at 6 p.m. and is presented by Assemblies of God Credit Union.
"We are extremely grateful for the support of AGCU to sponsor our opener against SAGU," said Evangel director of athletics Dr. Dennis McDonald. "Replacing the game we lost with the departure of Avila is great for our team and our fans adding a home game. SAGU will be a great early season test and we're expecting another exciting environment on national TV to open the 2018 season."
The game currently is the first scheduled football game of the 2018 season at any level. With the help of AGCU, the game will also be broadcast nationally on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN App. In addition to the season opener, the Crusader will appear on the ESPN family of networks three times during the season and twice regionally in Springfield and Kansas City.
Evangel will play six games home games in 2018 playing all home games for a third season at Tiger Stadium in Ozark, Missouri. The first three weekends Evangel will host SAGU, followed by Heart North Division matchups with Grand View on Sept. 1, and Benedictine on Sept. 8.
After a trip to Peru State on Sept. 15, Evangel will return to host Culver-Stockton in the Heart Game of the Week on ESPN3 Sept. 22. Back-to-back road trips to Iowa will end the non-conference portion of the schedule with the Heart North Division at William Penn on Sept. 29 and at Graceland on Oct. 6.
Evangel will return home to host Central Methodist on Oct. 13 before hosting MidAmerica Nazarene for Homecoming on Oct. 20.
With the departure of Avila to the KCAC, Evangel will end the regular season on the road at Missouri Valley on Oct. 27 followed by a trip to Baker on Nov. 10. The game week previously held by Avila will now be the Crusaders' bye week as the Nov. 10 matchup will end the season on ESPN3 as the Heart Game of the Week.
All game times are subject to change and remaining times will be announced at a later date.
